READING THE BAHA’I WRITINGS
FINDING THE HIDDEN GIFTS IN THE WRITINGS OF BAHA’U’LLAH

~ ~ ~ ~ ~
“…nothing greater than these verses hath ever appeared,
nor will ever be made manifest in the world!”
~ Bahá’u’lláh

Notes prepared by Brent Poirier for the 2017 Winter School at Green Acre

1 THE PURPOSES OF THIS SESSION

~ To understand the power of the Word of God to change our lives and the world

~ To see the relevance of twice-daily study of the Word of God to the Five-Year Plan

~ To take personal stock of our lives, and to consult about making our daily lives and homes a better environment for study of the Word

2 WHAT BENEFITS CAN WE PERSONALLY DERIVE FROM READING BAHA’U’LLAH’S WRITINGS?
“By My life! Couldst thou but know the things sent down by My Pen, and discover the treasures of My Cause, and the pearls of My mysteries which lie hid in the seas of My names and in the goblets of My words, thou wouldst, in thy love for My name, and in thy longing for My glorious and sublime Kingdom, lay down thy life in My path.”  (Bahá’u’lláh, The Summons of the Lord of Hosts, p. 85)
http://www.bahai.org/r/748495611

"Know thou that every ear which hearkeneth unto His Words with true faith shall be immune from the fire. Thus the believer, through his recognition of Him will appreciate the transcendent character of His heavenly Words, will wholeheartedly choose Him over others, and will refuse to incline his affections towards those who disbelieve in Him. Whatever one gaineth in the life to come is but the fruit of this faith. Indeed any man whose eye gazeth upon His Words with true faith well deserveth Paradise; and one whose conscience beareth witness unto His Words with true faith shall abide in Paradise and attain the presence of God; and one whose tongue giveth utterance to His Words with true faith shall have his abode in Paradise, wherein he will be seized with ecstasy in praise and glorification of God, the Ever-Abiding, Whose revelations of glory never end and the reviving breaths of Whose holiness never fail. Every hand which setteth down His Words with true faith shall be filled by God, both in this world and in the next, with things that are highly prized; and every breast which committeth His Words to memory, God shall cause, if it were that of a believer, to be filled with His love; and every heart which cherisheth the love of His Words and manifesteth in itself the signs of true faith when His Name is mentioned, and exemplifieth the words, “their hearts are thrilled with awe at the mention of God,”1 that heart will become the object of the glances of divine favor and on the Day of Resurrection will be highly praised by God." (The Báb, the Persian Bayan, Selections from the Writings of the Báb, p. 99) www.bahai.org/r/573475463

3 The blessings of being enraptured by His Words and apprehending their meaning

3a “Blessed is he that hath been enraptured by My wondrous melodies…”
(The Most Holy Tablet, Tablets of Bahá’u’lláh, p. 17)  http://www.bahai.org/r/258213930

3b “Blessed is the man who hath detached himself from all else but Me, hath soared in the atmosphere of My love, hath gained admittance into My Kingdom, gazed upon My realms of glory, quaffed the living waters of My bounty, hath drunk his fill from the heavenly river of My loving providence, acquainted himself with My Cause, apprehended that which I concealed within the treasury of My Words, and hath shone forth from the horizon of divine knowledge engaged in My praise and glorification. Verily, he is of Me. Upon him rest My mercy, My loving-kindness, My bounty and My glory.” (The Most Holy Tablet, Tablets of Bahá’u’lláh, p. 17)  http://www.bahai.org/r/258213930

3c “O people of Bahá! Soar upon the wings of detachment into the atmosphere of the love of your Lord, the All-Merciful. Arise then to render Him victorious, as bidden in the Preserved Tablet. Beware lest ye contend with any of My servants. Bestow upon them the sweet savours of God and His holy utterances, for through their potency all men will be enabled to turn unto Him. They that remain heedless of God in this Day are in truth lost in the drunkenness of their desires and perceive it not. Well is it with the one who, with lowliness and humility, hath set his face towards the Dayspring of the verses of his Lord.”
(Bahá’u’lláh, Days of Remembrance, Tablet 43, paragraph 3)  http://www.bahai.org/r/313526265

4 Meditating on Bahá’u’lláh’s Writings to grasp the depths of their meanings

4a "Meditate upon that which hath streamed forth from the heaven of the Will of thy Lord, He Who is the Source of all grace, that thou mayest grasp the intended meaning which is enshrined in the sacred depths of the Holy Writings."
(Bahá’u’lláh, The Tablet of Wisdom, Tablets of Bahá’u’lláh p. 143)
http://www.bahai.org/r/969741149

4b "Divine things are too deep to be expressed by common words. The heavenly teachings are expressed in parable in order to be understood and preserved for ages to come. When the spiritually minded dive deeply into the ocean of their meaning they bring to the surface the pearls of their inner significance. There is no greater pleasure than to study God's Word with a spiritual mind."
(Abdu'l-Baha in London, and Compilation on Deepening,
https://reference.bahai.org/en/t/ab/ABL/abl-38.html  )

4c “…the reading of the scriptures and holy books is for no other purpose except to enable the reader to apprehend their meaning and unravel their innermost mysteries”
(Bahá’u’lláh, The Kitab-i-Iqan, p. 172)
http://www.bahai.org/r/966821576

5 Not to be prideful about having studied His Writings:
“Pride not yourselves on much reading of the verses…” (Bahá’u’lláh, The Kitab-i-Aqdas, Paragraph 149, p. 73-74)
http://www.bahai.org/r/253167976

6 Basing our entire being on the divine utterances and being made new by them

6a “Raise thy house upon the solid foundation of divine utterances, and give praise to thy Lord. He, verily, shall suffice thee above all the peoples of the earth.”
(Bahá’u’lláh, Súriy-i-Ra’ís, The Summons of the Lord of Hosts p. 150, para. 25)
http://www.bahai.org/r/722134419

6b “Every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God is endowed with such potency as can instill new life into every human frame…”
(Gleanings from the Writings of Bahá’u’lláh LXXIV, p. 141)
http://www.bahai.org/r/043743455

7 Praying to receive the gifts God has concealed within His Words:
"Inspire then my soul, O my God, with Thy wondrous remembrance, that I may glorify Thy name. Number me not with them who read Thy words and fail to find Thy hidden gift which, as decreed by Thee, is contained therein, and which quickeneth the souls of Thy creatures and the hearts of Thy servants."
(Prayers and Meditations by Bahá’u’lláh LVI, p. 83)
http://www.bahai.org/r/213370884

8 Reading His verses to be uplifted nearer to God by them

8a “Read ye the sacred verses in such measure that ye be not overcome by languor and despondency. Lay not upon your souls that which will weary them and weigh them down, but rather what will lighten and uplift them, so that they may soar on the wings of the Divine verses towards the Dawning-place of His manifest signs; this will draw you nearer to God, did ye but comprehend.”

(Bahá’u’lláh, The Kitab-i-Aqdas, Paragraph 149, p. 73-74) http://www.bahai.org/r/253167976

8b “Give ear unto the verses of God which He Who is the sacred Lote-Tree reciteth unto you. They are assuredly the infallible balance, established by God, the Lord of this world and the next. Through them the soul of man is caused to wing its flight towards the Dayspring of Revelation, and the heart of every true believer is suffused with light.”

(Bahá’u’lláh, The Most Holy Book, paragraph 148, p. 73)
http://www.bahai.org/r/706273075

9 ‘Abdu’l-Bahá writes that the Tablets of Bahá’u’lláh are the remedy for the suffering of the world and have the power to motivate our inner selves

9a “Direct thine attention to the holy Tablets; read thou the Ishraqat, Tajalliyyat, the Words of Paradise, the Glad Tidings, the Tarazat, the Most Holy Book. Then wilt thou see that today these heavenly Teachings are the remedy for a sick and suffering world, and a healing balm for the sores on the body of mankind. They are the spirit of life, the ark of salvation, the magnet to draw down eternal glory, the dynamic power to motivate the inner self of man.”
(Selections from the Writings of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Section 29, p. 60)  http://www.bahai.org/r/078864865

9b “Naught but the celestial potency of the Word of God, which ruleth and transcendeth the realities of all things, is capable of harmonizing the divergent thoughts, sentiments, ideas, and convictions of the children of men. Verily, it is the penetrating power in all things, the mover of souls and the binder and regulator in the world of humanity.”
(Selections from the Writings of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Section 225, p. 291)
http://www.bahai.org/r/203435178

10 Shoghi Effendi wrote that the Writings of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá also have a “creative power” which enables us to carry our responsibilities in the Cause:
"I am enclosing for you personally the copy of the dear Master's Testament,....you will also see what a great responsibility He has placed on me which nothing short of the creative power of His word can help me to face..."
(From a letter of Shoghi Effendi quoted in “The Priceless Pearl,” p. 48) Electronic copy here:
https://bahai-library.com/khanum_priceless_pearl

10a “It is, however, very important that these newcomers should study the teachings and become thoroughly familiar with them, otherwise their faith will be established upon shifting sand and could be easily demolished. The words of Bahá'u'lláh and the Master, however, have a creative power and are sure to awaken in the reader the undying fire of the love of God.”

11 Bahá’u’lláh writes that the Word of God alone has the power to revive the world

11a “The corrosion of ungodliness is eating into the vitals of human society; what else but the Elixir of His potent Revelation can cleanse and revive it? …  [the] task of converting satanic strength into heavenly power is one that We have been empowered to accomplish.…The Word of God, alone, can claim the distinction of being endowed with the capacity required for so great and far-reaching a change.” (Gleanings from the Writings of Bahá’u’lláh XCIX, p. 200) http://www.bahai.org/r/534103048

12 Bahá’u’lláh explains that the achievements and advancements in the world have been brought about through the potency of His verses, and that nothing greater than them has ever been in the world
12a “Every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God is endowed with such potency as can instill new life into every human frame, if ye be of them that comprehend this truth. All the wondrous works ye behold in this world have been manifested through the operation of His supreme and most exalted Will, His wondrous and inflexible Purpose. Through the mere revelation of the word ‘Fashioner,’ issuing forth from His lips and proclaiming His attribute to mankind, such power is released as can generate, through successive ages, all the manifold arts which the hands of man can produce. This, verily, is a certain truth. No sooner is this resplendent word uttered, than its animating energies, stirring within all created things, give birth to the means and instruments whereby such arts can be produced and perfected. All the wondrous achievements ye now witness are the direct consequences of the Revelation of this Name. In the days to come, ye will, verily, behold things of which ye have never heard before. Thus hath it been decreed in the Tablets of God, and none can comprehend it except them whose sight is sharp. In like manner, the moment the word expressing My attribute ‘The Omniscient’ issueth forth from My mouth, every created thing will, according to its capacity and limitations, be invested with the power to unfold the knowledge of the most marvelous sciences, and will be empowered to manifest them in the course of time at the bidding of Him Who is the Almighty, the All-Knowing.”
(Gleanings from the Writings of Bahá’u’lláh LXXIV, p. 141)
http://www.bahai.org/r/043743455

12b “Knowledge is one of the wondrous gifts of God. It is incumbent upon everyone to acquire it. Such arts and material means as are now manifest have been achieved by virtue of His knowledge and wisdom which have been revealed in Epistles and Tablets through His Most Exalted Pen -- a Pen out of whose treasury pearls of wisdom and utterance and the arts and crafts of the world are brought to light.”
(Tablets of Bahá’u’lláh, p. 39  http://www.bahai.org/r/583694921 )

12c “…[N]othing greater than these verses hath ever appeared, nor will ever be made manifest in the world!”
(Bahá’u’lláh, the Book of Certitude, p. 207)
http://www.bahai.org/r/699347919

12d “To read but one of the verses of My Revelation is better than to peruse the Scriptures of both the former and latter generations. This is the Utterance of the All-Merciful, would that ye had ears to hear! Say: This is the essence of knowledge, did ye but understand.”  (Bahá’u’lláh, The Most Holy Book, paragraph 138, p. 68)
http://www.bahai.org/r/163886933

13 Through Bahá’u’lláh’s Writings war will be banished and unity established:

13a “. . . it is Our purpose, through the loving providence of God -- exalted be His glory -- and His surpassing mercy, to abolish, through the force of Our utterance, all disputes, war, and bloodshed, from the face of the earth.”
(Bahá’u’lláh, Epistle to the Son of the Wolf, p. 33)
http://www.bahai.org/r/464681704

13b “Through the power of the words He hath uttered the whole of the human race can be illumined with the light of unity . . .”
(Gleanings from the Writings of Bahá’u’lláh CXXXI, p. 286)
http://www.bahai.org/r/026029088

13c “Through each and every one of the verses which the Pen of the Most High hath revealed, the doors of love and unity have been unlocked and flung open to the face of men.”

(Tablet of the World, Tablets of Bahá’u’lláh, p. 87)  http://www.bahai.org/r/354019569

13d   (The Tabernacle of Unity, p. 8, paragraph 1.12) www.bahai.org/r/239697913

14 Bahá’u’lláh describes the believers as the world’s spiritual physicians bringing His remedy to the world, and that the hearts of the righteous are set ablaze by their recitation

14a “O My loved ones! ye are the world's spiritual physicians. It is incumbent upon you, through the power and might of God, to heal by the sovereign remedy of the Most Great Name the soul-sickness of the kindreds of the earth and clarify the vision of all mankind....”

(Bahá'u'lláh, The Bahá'í World Volume II, pp. 62-63, translated by Shoghi Effendi) http://www.bahai.org/library/other-literature/periodicals-supplementary-materials/bahai-world/

14b “Intone, O My servant, the verses of God that have been received by thee, as intoned by them who have drawn nigh unto Him, that the sweetness of thy melody may kindle thine own soul, and attract the hearts of all men. Whoso reciteth, in the privacy of his chamber, the verses revealed by God, the scattering angels of the Almighty shall scatter abroad the fragrance of the words uttered by his mouth, and shall cause the heart of every righteous man to throb. Though he may, at first, remain unaware of its effect, yet the virtue of the grace vouchsafed unto him must needs sooner or later exercise its influence upon his soul. Thus have the mysteries of the Revelation of God been decreed by virtue of the Will of Him Who is the Source of power and wisdom.”
(Gleanings from the Writings of Bahá’u’lláh CXXXVI, p. 295)
http://www.bahai.org/r/994654469

14c “It behoveth the friends in whatever land they be, to gather together in meetings, and therein to speak wisely and with eloquence, and to read the verses of God; for it is God's Words that kindle love's fire and set it ablaze.”

(Bahá’u’lláh, Compilation on Bahá’í Meetings) http://www.bahai.org/library/authoritative-texts/compilations/bahai-meetings/

15 The Bahá’í Writings compare the human being and the Word of God to a tree:

15a “Man is like unto a tree. . . The Water for these trees is the living water of the sacred Words uttered by the Beloved of the world.”
(Tablets of Bahá’u’lláh, p. 257)  http://www.bahai.org/r/381745460

16 Shoghi Effendi compared the growing Bahá’í community to a tree and, wrote of the need to ensure a proper balance between expansion of its branches and nourishment of its roots by study and application of the Writings

16a “… attention should be increasingly directed to the vital need of ensuring, by every means possible, the deepening of the Faith, the understanding and the spiritual life of the individuals who, as the privileged members of this community, are called upon to participate in this glorious unfoldment, and are lending their assistance to this historic evolution. A profound study of the Faith which they have espoused, its history, its spiritual as well as administrative principles; a thorough understanding of the Covenant of Bahá'u'lláh and of the Will of 'Abdu'l-Bahá, a deeper realization of the implications of the claims advanced by the Founders of the Faith; strict adherence to the laws and principles which they have established; a greater dedication to the fundamentals and verities enshrined in their teachings -- these constitute, I feel convinced, the urgent need of the members of this rapidly expanding community. For upon this spiritual foundation must depend the solidity of the institutions which they are now so painstakingly erecting. Every outward thrust into new fields, every multiplication of Bahá'í institutions, must be paralleled by a deeper thrust of the roots which sustain the spiritual life of the community and ensure its sound development. From this vital, this ever-present need, attention must at no time be diverted; nor must it be, under any circumstances, neglected, or subordinated to the no less vital and urgent task of ensuring the outer expansion of Bahá'í administrative institutions. That this community, so alive, so devoted, so strikingly and rapidly developing, may maintain a proper balance between these two essential aspects of its development, and march forward with rapid strides and along sound lines toward the goal of the Plan it has adopted, is the ardent hope of my heart and my constant prayer. Your true and grateful brother, Shoghi.”
(Letter to a National Spiritual Assembly in the handwriting of Shoghi Effendi dated Dec. 30, 1948, Letters from the Guardian to Australia and New Zealand, p. 75)   http://reference.bahai.org/en/t/se/LANZ/lanz-50.html

17. Our study of the Creative Word is part of our service to the Plan.

17a “Central to the pattern of action evolving in a cluster is the individual and collective transformation effected through the agency of the Word of God. From the beginning of the sequence of courses, a participant encounters Bahá’u’lláh’s Revelation in considering such weighty themes as worship, service to humanity, the life of the soul, and the education of children and youth. As a person cultivates the habit of study and deep reflection upon the Creative Word, this process of transformation reveals itself in an ability to express one’s understanding of profound concepts and to explore spiritual reality in conversations of significance. These capacities are visible not only in the elevated discussions that increasingly characterize interactions within the community, but in the ongoing conversations that reach well beyond—not least between the Bahá’í youth and their peers—extending to include parents whose daughters and sons are benefiting from the community’s programmes of education. Through exchanges of this kind, consciousness of spiritual forces is raised, apparent dichotomies yield to unexpected insights, a sense of unity and common calling is fortified, confidence that a better world can be created is strengthened, and a commitment to action becomes manifest. Such distinctive conversations gradually attract ever-larger numbers to take part in a range of community activities. Themes of faith and certitude surface naturally, prompted by the receptivity and experiences of those involved. What is clear, then, is that as the institute process in a cluster gains momentum, the act of teaching comes to assume greater prominence in the lives of the friends.
(Message from the Universal House of Justice to the Conference of the Continental Boards of Counsellors, 29 December 2015, paragraph 14; “Framework for Action,” p. 214, para. 35.14)
http://www.bahai.org/r/577166452

18 Likewise, in the courses of the Ruhi Institute the friends are called upon first, to establish the twice-daily pattern of study of the Writings of the Manifestation of God, and then to develop a plan of study of all of the Bahá’í Writings. The very first practice in Ruhi Institute Book One is to “read daily, in the morning and evening, some of the Writings of the Faith.” The Notes to the Most Holy Book clarify that this practice means the twice-daily reflection on the Writings of the Manifestation. Then, in Units Two and Three of Ruhi Book 8 we are “encouraged to draw up a personal plan for carrying out a systematic study” of the entire body of the Writings of Bahá’u’lláh, the Master and the Guardian. For further information please see the last two pages of these notes.

18a

“Be watchful lest the concerns and preoccupations of this world prevent you from observing that which hath been enjoined upon you by Him Who is the Mighty, the Faithful.” (Baha'u'llah, The Kitab-i-Aqdas, paragraph 134, p. 66) http://www.bahai.org/r/428077030

19 Reading the Writings as a family:

19a “Teach your children the verses revealed from the heaven of majesty and power…” (Bahá’u’lláh, The Kitab-i-Aqdas, paragraph 150, p. 74) http://www.bahai.org/r/792505025

19b  Kiss the face and hair of thy dear children for me, love them and educate them in divine education.”
(Tablets of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá Abbas, Volume III, p. 689)
http://reference.bahai.org/en/t/ab/TAB/tab-757.html

(A personal suggestion: Offer “Selections from the Writings of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá” to your Junior Youth and Youth, for inspiration, upliftment, guidance, and freedom from fear and boredom. In my personal view it is the most accessible to young people of all of the Bahá’í scriptures, and a good next step up from stories and youth books.)

20 Themes for discussion:

Read the Writings on our phones: Kindle, download the app “Bahá’í prayers and readings,” listen to the Writings on tape

The Universal House of Justice has placed the Bahá’í Writings on the Internet for us to read or download here http://reference.bahai.org/en/
and here:

Making more time in our lives to read the Creative Word:

Read the Writings during mealtime – sometimes sit separately from co-workers if mealtime conversations at work are less worthwhile.

Break social habits to create time for more worthwhile endeavors.

21 Some complain that Shoghi Effendi’s writings are too difficult. On this subject, Amatu’l-Baha Ruhiyyih Khanum wrote of the beauty of his writings:

21a “Unlike so many people Shoghi Effendi wrote what he meant and meant exactly what he wrote. It is impossible to eliminate any word from one of his sentences without sacrificing part of the meaning, so concise, so pithy is his style. A book like God Passes By is a veritable essence of essences; from this single hundred-year history, fifty books could easily be written and none of them would be superficial or lacking in material, so rich is the source provided by the Guardian, so condensed his treatment of it. The language in which Shoghi Effendi wrote, whether for the Bahá'ís of the West or the East, has set a standard which should effectively prevent them from descending to the level of illiterate literates which often so sadly characterizes the present generation as far as the usage and appreciation of words is concerned. He never compromised with the ignorance of his readers but expected them, in their thirst for knowledge, to overcome their ignorance. Shoghi Effendi chose, to the best of his great ability, the right vehicle for his thought and it made no difference to him whether the average person was going to know the word he used or not. After all, what one does not know one can find out. Although he had such a brilliant command of language, he frequently reinforced his knowledge by certainty through looking up the word he planned to use in Webster's big dictionary. In his translations of the Bahá'í writings, and above all in his own compositions, Shoghi Effendi set a standard that educates and raises the cultural level of the reader at the same time that it feeds his mind and soul with thoughts and truth.”
(“The Guardian of the Bahá’í Faith” by Ruhiyyih Rabbani, pp. 83-84)

22 Identifying obstacles to reading the Writings

Internal obstacles: Hesitation to start, feeling intimidated by the large body of Bahá’í literature.  Banishing excuses and vain imaginings: “That’s for scholars.” How can we create more time, what can we change? Let’s take account: What are we doing that we can do less of - TV time, Facebook time? Conversations with people that are just a habit? Obstacles in our environment: Needing a secure place for uninterrupted immersion in the Word.

23. Supporting our family members in their study of the Writings

A need for focus, for reducing distractions. Eliminating interruptions – from people, e-mail, phone. Winning the support of our family. It is the most important time of our day, the time when we are deriving nourishment.

23a “When the children are ready for bed, let the mother read or sing them the Odes of the Blessed Beauty, so that from their earliest years they will be educated by these verses of guidance.”
(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Compilation on Family Life, The Compilation of Compilations Vol. I, p. 279)  http://bahai-library.com/hornby_lights_guidance&chapter=2

23b “Thou didst write as to the children: from the very beginning, the children must receive divine education and must continually be reminded to remember their God.”
(Selections from the Writings of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá, p. 126)

REFERENCES IN THE RUHI INSTITUTE BOOKS ENCOURAGING US TO MAKE
A PERSONAL PLAN FOR THE STUDY OF THE BAHA’I WRITINGS

24 The very first practice in Ruhi Institute Book One is to “read daily, in the morning and evening, some of the Writings of the Faith.” This practice of twice daily study of the Sacred Text is based upon the verse of the Most Holy Book, “Recite ye the verses of God every morn and eventide.” The Notes to the Most Holy Book clarify which Writings are intended.

in Unit Two of Book 8 the participants are encouraged to draw up a personal plan for the study of the writings of the Guardian:

The suggestion of setting up a “personal plan” for a “systematic study” of the Writings of Bahá’u’lláh, the Master and the beloved Guardian, individually and in groups, is reinforced in Unit Three of Book 8.

Also pointed out is the joy of reflecting on how much of the Word of God we will have studied over our lifetime, as we instill the habit of rigorous and methodical study of the Bahá’í Writings.

Additional quotations from the Writings of Bahá’u’lláh on the potency of the Word of God are in the Compilation on Deepening http://tinyurl.com/ydfd9phb and also found here: http://bahai-insights.blogspot.com/2016/01/compilation-power-word-of-god.html
